Bread is a college-focused skill-sharing and information-sharing app designed to enhance the campus experience for students by providing convenient access to campus and community events and opportunities. Named after the popular meme, “Good morning hustlers, let’s get this bread”, the app empowers students by connecting with them with opportunities to apply their skills and explore their interest while building meaningful connections that will better prepare them for their professional careers.

Bread combines the professional portfolio and skillsets-based interface of LinkedIn with the engaging and playful design commonly found in dating apps. This creates an informative and enjoyable platform for students that also effectively connects individuals with compatible skills and interests.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH

Desire for making connections

Above are student examples of efforts to connect with others in their community regarding skill-sharing, hiring opportunities, events, club meetings, competitions and casting calls. These posts were found across Instagram, Facebook and text messages.

Poor reach across current platforms

Students took the greatest initiative with information received from school emails, which students rated highly for trust, as well as text messages for their personal feel and frequency of use. Facebook performed the most poorly, with posts receiving less than 5 interactions on average.

Impact of strong relationships

Text messages garnered the most initiative from students, benefitting from trust and comfort within friend circles which foster a practice attitude of helping and engaging with shared interests. Bread’s success hinges on fostering a sense of closeness among users to invite meaningful engagement.

DESIGN GOALS

  1. Establish a platform for students to seek and offer skillsets.

  2. Effectively connect users to others with compatible skills and interests by consolidating information previously found across multiple channels.

  3. Enhance the campus experience for students by granting users access to a broader community.

  4. Encourage user engagement and retention through a tiered award system which recognizes and rewards the most active users.

FINAL PRODUCT

DISCOVERING OPPORTUNTIIES

The search or ‘Discovery’ tab offers users the ability to browse through ‘Cards’, or posts by other Bread users relating to anything from skill-sharing opportunities, campus events, guest seminars, club meetings and more. Users have the option to filter cards by tags in case they are searching for specific opportunities, or can view tags based on recency by selecting a card from the bottom.

BUILDING CONNECTIONS

When a student finds a card of interest on the Bread app, the platform shares the profile of the original poster. This facilitates relationship building for talent or skills-sharing cards, enabling both users to exchange project details. For event or survey related cards, it allows users to inquire the original poster with questions or to view related content within the app.

REWARDING ACTIVE COMMUNITY MEMBERS

The Bread app encourages user engagement and retention through a tiered award systems. Users fall into the ‘Platinum Tier’ for extensive in-app engagement with other users, and ‘Silver Tier’ for casual usage. Awards like ‘Helping Hand’ and ‘Pay it Forward’ are different levels of awards for skill-sharing based achievements, such as helping 2 other users or 10 other users. These awards are displayed on user profiles to showcase the areas in which a user is most heavily involved in the community to facilitate meaningful connections.
