Mulberry Tree (Kozo) Fibers
Synthetic Dye
This dress was handmade from Japanese mulberry tree bark, or kozo. The fibers were extracted and made into paper through a process of scraping, boiling, cleaning and beating before being dyed with a synthetic black dye. Each sheet of paper was pulled from a vat of water with a framed mesh screen, then pressed and died flat to create eight long panels that were then sewn together. The delicate straps which support the dress are made from the same handmade paper, cut into strips and repeatedly rolled over a rough surface to compress the fibers and produce a thin yet durable string.
