The RISD Museum App serves as a companion to the museum experience, offering visitors the ability to scan and identify artworks to gain deeper insights beyond traditional museum plaques. The app, which personalizes its content to its user, also recommends related artworks with the aim to enhance the visitors journey by providing content that may inspire or be relevant to the users objectives while visiting the museum. With RISD students, local high school students and families with young children in mind, the RISD Museum App aims to be easily accessible, navigable and act as a supplementary resource to the museum and website by streamlining information delivery to visitors to inspire a passion for art, a deeper understanding of art history and the contemporary art world. Beyond its purpose to inform, the RISD Museum App aims to encourage return visitors and further exploration of art.
BACKGROUND RESEARCH
The RISD Museum, founded in 1877 amasses a collection of over 100,000 diverse artworks spanning ancient to contemporary times including paintings, sculptures, textiles and more. The RISD Museum strives to promote civic engagement and to introduce communities to various cultures, practices, ideas and philosophies through art as a medium. Through its commitments to accessibility and environmental stewardship, the RISD Museum strives to foster an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn about, discover and engage in art.
USER RESEARCH
RISD Students
As the primary user group, RISD Students are immersed in art on a daily basis through classes, assignments, lectures and more. The RISD Museum App is designed to enrich their academic pursuits by providing valuable insights relating to the museum’s collection.
Local High School Students
Often visiting the RISD Museum in field trips, local Providence high school students are encouraged to learn about and engage with artwork. The RISD Museum App serves to inspire interest, curiosity and a passion in art for these students.
Families with Young Children
To some visitors, museums can be intimidating with its quiet, pristine ambiance and security presence. The RISD Museum APP aims to fulfill the museum’s mission of creating a more welcoming environment, and offers its young visitors and guardians with a source of playful entertainment.

Enhance visitor experiences at the RISD Museum with the integration of augmented reality, which offers access to exclusive in-app insights of works featured in the museum.

The search or ‘Discovery’ tab offers users the ability to browse through ‘Cards’, or posts by other Bread users relating to anything from skill-sharing opportunities, campus events, guest seminars, club meetings and more. Users have the option to filter cards by tags in case they are searching for specific opportunities, or can view tags based on recency by selecting a card from the bottom.
